Highly Rec’d: 14 Black Lesbian Movies & Dramas Focusing on Black Women’s Love Stories

As a queer black woman, it becomes a familiar experience to rarely come across representation that reflects your own identity on screen. Regardless of your preferred genre, it can be quite challenging to find explicit representation of queer and black characters. In the past, it was extremely uncommon to come across black lesbian movies in the mainstream media.

Fortunately, streaming platforms have made it incredibly convenient to discover filmmakers who specialize in telling stories about black lesbian women. It’s a relief to know that these talented filmmakers are out there.

I’ve curated a collection of black lesbian movies and I hope there is a movie here for you.

1. The color purple (1985)

The novel from which “The Color Purple” originated is incredibly deep and rich, making it a captivating story that has been adapted multiple times, including its highly acclaimed version on Broadway. 

However, “The Color Purple” delves much deeper than just the stories of racial and gender disparities. It captures a universal journey of self-discovery and awakening, intertwined with the changing dynamics of familial relationships.

“The Color Purple” is a remarkable tribute to the progress of humanity, serving as a timeless reflection of history and its relevance to our current world.

2. The Watermelon Woman (1997)

Similar to Charles Burnett’s 1978 film “Killer of Sheep,” this cinematic piece utilizes a raw, realist technique to authentically portray the vibrant culture of Black Americans. It incorporates African drums, rap, blues, and jazz, enhancing its exploration of Black cultural identity.

In this independently crafted tale, Sheryl Dunye takes charge both behind and in front of the camera, centering around the quest for “the Watermelon Woman.” 

The narrative takes us on a journey through a web of interwoven tales, skillfully weaving together the emotional paths of Black women (or lesbians) symbolized by “The Watermelon Woman” in the 1920s and 1930s. 

It offers a thoughtful examination of the lives of Black lesbians in the 1990s, delving into their societal status throughout various time periods.

3. Born in Flames (1983)

This black lesbian movie is a powerful reminder of the challenges women face, breaking through the surface of societal expectations they encounter. 

Inspired by the heartbreaking loss of a renowned Black feminist activist who passed away while in police custody, a passionate movement emerges, challenging the patriarchal system and uniting different feminist groups in a powerful uprising. 

The film takes on a faux-documentary approach, enhancing its portrayal of reality through its visual texture and cinematographic artistry.

Embracing a minimalist aesthetic and lengthy discursive critiques, the creators boldly question the political dominion wielded by visual media and its symbolic tools. In the late 1970s, a new wave of artistic expression emerged, driven by a rebellious energy. 

Punk rock, Neo-expressionism, and graffiti became powerful mediums for artists to convey their messages. Enthusiastic film enthusiasts explored the world of feature filmmaking and music videos. 

Within a dystopian narrative, the film expertly combines elements of feminism and rap music to tell the gripping story of a group of courageous female guerrillas who unite to challenge an oppressive government.

Quinn and Isabela truly shine in the spotlight, captivating hearts with their incredible dynamic. In addition, the show does an excellent job of tackling the intricate realities and obstacles faced by the Black community, effortlessly incorporating these important themes into its storyline.

JJ is a ‘Stud’lesbian. Working alongside her close friend Seb, a stylish and vibrant individual, they specialize in capturing beautiful moments as wedding photographers. 

But things get more interesting when JJ becomes entranced by a captivating diva, leading her into a whirlwind romance that quickly challenges her relationship with Seb. 

At a crossroads, JJ finds herself torn between the excitement of her passionate new relationship and the unwavering loyalty of her best friend.

This series delves into the intricate dynamics of friendship, the pursuit of love, and the humorous misadventures that unfold along their life’s path.

7. Bruised (2020)

Jackie Justice played by Halle Berry, is an MMA fighter who has faced setbacks in her career and struggled to find success in the one area she’s always excelled – fighting.

She carries a multitude of burdens in her heart – struggling to make ends meet, enduring a toxic relationship, dealing with challenging children, navigating a complicated relationship with her mother, being haunted by childhood nightmares, and grappling with complex feelings of attraction. 

It appears that the more unfortunate she becomes, the more difficult the challenges she encounters. In the confines of the bathroom, a poignant moment unfolds as she grapples with her emotions, feeling suffocated by the weight of her struggles.

A 17-year-old Black girl confidently asserts, “I am not broken, I am free,” as she grapples with the complex interplay between her sense of self and her connections with others. When she breaks free from the boundaries of her home, her beauty shines brightly.

Black lesbians are often marginalized and pushed to the fringes of society. 

This black lesbian movie story, inspired by an award-winning short by the Black female filmmaker Dee Rees, has received unanimous acclaim from a host of independent film critics, even though it hasn’t caught the attention of the mainstream media spotlight.

10. Rafiki (2018)

This black lesbian movie is a remarkable accomplishment, not only for Kenya but for the entire African continent. 

It’s quite ironic that this Kenyan lesbian film was screened in many parts of Africa, but unfortunately, it was banned in its own country Kenya. 

With the determination of a passionate filmmaker, the director took a daring step by taking legal action against the Kenyan government. 

This courageous move resulted in a triumphant outcome, granting the opportunity for a limited release of the film within the country.

The main character of the film is an African lesbian who represents the unique experience of being Black, female, and gay. Her identity places her at the lowest point of discrimination’s hierarchy.

12. Pitch Perfect (2012)

With great enthusiasm, they come together to sing in the final competition, delivering a perfect performance that surpasses their male counterparts from the same institution, securing the championship. 

The story captures the spirit reminiscent of the Glee movie, touching on themes of togetherness, determination, and competition in the world of music.

13. The L Word Season 5 (2008)

Despite the challenges they face, their mutual hardships give rise to a deep bond, creating a story of unforeseen camaraderie and love within the confines of the prison.

Immersed in the lively atmosphere of New York City, “Betty” takes us on a 6-episode journey into the lives of a dynamic group of women who are making their mark in the skateboarding world. 

This comedic project challenges the traditional male dominance in this realm and showcases the diverse experiences of these women.

Every one of these women exudes a unique sense of self, fearlessly confronting the obstacles that come their way. 

During their summer skateboarding adventures, they confront and question the lasting impact of a culture rooted in patriarchy and colonialism.

 It’s important to address a recurring issue that some individuals struggle to understand: “Respecting boundaries and obtaining consent is crucial, especially when it comes to dating.”

I eagerly anticipate the emergence of more narratives or films that prominently showcase black women, particularly black lesbian women, in the coming years. 

Those who are truly great and deserving should be treated with the seriousness and celebration they deserve.
